History of New Potatoes
One day a Jersey farmer, Hugh de la
Haye, found two really big potatoes in the exhibit on the counter in a local
store. Hugh de la Haye purchased them and took the potatoes to home. That night
he organized a dinner in which he invited some friends. After everybody finish the
meal he showed his freiends the two huge potatoes, one of which everbody was
very, very surprised,
The friends start cutting the particular
potato into sixteen pieces which they took and planted on a 'côtil' above
Bellozanne valley.
The following spring, they produced a
large and early crop. Strangely, though the parent potatoes and most of the new
crop were round one plant produced nothing but uniquely kidney-shaped potatoes.
Years after the disover of new potatoes, Hugh de la
Haye was later honoured by islanders at a formal
gathering with a testimonial and a purse of gold sovereigns.
