Fig
History
Thought to be the sweetest fruit, figs
are also one of the oldest fruits recognized by man. It's no wonder the fig has
been enjoyed for centuries. Its sweet, delicious flesh, long used as a
sweetener before the advent of refined sugars, enhances both savory dishes and
desserts. Not to worry if you don't have access to fresh figs. Dried figs are
readily available.
The edible fig is one of the first plants
that was cultivated by humans.
Figs are originated in northern Asia
Minor. Spanish brought the fig to America in 1520. It was cultivated from
Afghanistan to Portugal, also grown in Pithoragarh in the Kumaon hills of
India. From the 15th century onwards, it was grown in areas including Northern
Europe and the New World. Figs were also a common food source for the Romans.
Figs can be found in continental climates
with hot summers, and can be harvested up to four times per year. Thousands of
cultivars
have been developed as human migration brought
the fig to many places outside its natural range.
